Springdale Historic Preservation Foundation (SHPF) was formed in the mid-1990's by a community group of people concerned over the deteriorating condition of Springdale Cemetery and Mausoleum resulting from several years of neglect under private ownership.

In 1999 responding to complaints from the SHPF and others, the State of Illinois Comptroller revoked the private owners license to operate the cemetery and Springdale was placed in receivership.

For the next few years, SHPF members together with hundreds of community volunteers assisted the Cemetery by grass cutting, leaf raking, tree pruning, trash removal and various other tasks while exploring the formation of a collaborative coalition of local governments to own and operate Springdale Cemetery and Mausoleum in perpetuity.

It has now been four years since Springdale Cemetery became owned by the City of Peoria and operated by a Coalition of local governments together with SHPF. SHPF, through the charitable efforts of its members together with many other community volunteers has raised in excess of$ 1.2 million dollars over this period of time which has been used to assist cemetery operations, equipment purchases, mausoleum restoration, monument restoration and other capital needs. The countless hours of volunteer efforts would probably exceed an additional; $500,000 in value to Springdale.

While much has been accomplished in the restoration at Springdale, there are still significant other capital improvements needed tliat cannot be furnished by Cemetery operations or the governmental bodies.
