Horace G. Anderson.

Came to Peoria in 1848; served on School Board, CountySupervisor. Director of First National Bank at time of its organization.   Died in 1912 -Rose Hill

 

 

 

 

Robert H. Avery

Inventor  Designed the “Avery Cultivator” while a prisoner at the Andersonville Prison during the Civil War.  He and his brother Cyrus founded the Avery Planter Company.  Died in 1892 - Hickory Slope

 

 

 

Charles Ballance

An early pioneer and later an attorney, noted for his participation in the Peoria French Claims. Author of a "History of Peoria" published in 1870. Died in 1874 - Vista Hill

 

 

 

 

Mark M. Bassett

A judge and Civil War veteran, he was one of the men in the spectacular tunnel escape from Libby Prison, at Richmond, in 1864. Died in 1910 - The Cove

 

 

 

 

Fred Block

A retailer with Schipper and Block and Block and Kuhl stores. Died 1907 - Fairview Lawn

LydiaMoss Bradley

Donor of land for Bradley Polytechnic Institute (BradleyUniversity) and Bradley Park. Died in 1908 - Mt Prospect

 

 

 

Captain Zealy Moss

Only known Soldier of the Revolutionary War buried in Springdale - moved here from another site by daughter Lydia Moss Bradley. He was a Baptist minister. Died in 1839 - Mt.Prospect  

 

 

 

Christian Buehler

Made his fortune in real estate investments in Chicago .  Other business interests included Buehler Markets and E. Godel Company.  Died in 1926 - Buehler Family mausoleum, on the bluff across from Fairview Lawn

Octave Chanute

Came to Peoria to engineer the first rail bridge over the Illinois River, but is best known as the friend and consultant, who helped the Wright Brothers to their design their early aircraft; he is considered the Father of Aviation. Died 1910 - NorthCenter

 

 

 

Almiran S. Cole

Built and operated Peoria's first distillery in 1844 and was an extensive land owner. Died in 1937 - Lawn Division

Jonathan Boyce Taylor

Negro Leagues pitcher, coach and manager, known as Steel Arm Johnny was buried in an unmarked grave; recognized with a memorial marker in 2007. Died 1956 - Sunset Terrace

 

 

 

Thomas Ford

Governor of Illinois 1842-1846 during the Mormon troubles and the beginning of the Mexican War; he wrote his "History of Illinois 1818-1847" while living in Peoria before his death. Died in 1850 - Rose Hill

 

 

 

H. H. Cole (Cole Bros.)

He was a pioneer photographer who Photographed Abraham Lincoln in 1858. Died in 1925 - SouthCenter

John Comstock

He was one of the most successful real estate men in Peoria .  Died in 1905 - Walnut Grove Division.

 

 

 

 

Captain Henry Detweiller

Pioneer steamboat captain and Civil War Veteran, he is the namesake of DetweillerPark named in honor of this family; the park land donated by Thomas Detweiller. Died in 1903 - SummitRange

 

 

 

Simeon Dewitt Drown

He was Peoria's first historian, and was  town surveyor, street commissioner, a printer, a publisher, and had completed enumeration for the first book printed and bound in Peoria, entitled "The Peoria City Directory for 1844". He was a soldier in War of 1812. Died in 1873 - Oak Ridge

Edward Easton

A highly successful grain dealer, he was also the President of Board of Trade (1877). He erected the Central City Elevator. He was VP of Monarch Distilling Company and President of Peoria Terminal Railway. Died in 1901 - Vista Hill

 

 

 

 

Josiah Fulton

One of first to settle in Peoria, he farmed area where Courthouse and First National Bank presently stand. Died in 1894 - North Hill

 

 

 

Romeo Benjamin Garrett

He was a professor of sociology at BradleyUniversity and the First African-American professor at the university, author of The Negro in Peoria. Died in 2000 - Resurrection

John Henry Gwynn, Jr.

Civil rights leader and president of the Peoria chapter of the NAACP 1961-1993; he challenged Peoria to open its schools, unions, homes and jobs to blacks. Died 1996 – Memories

 

 

 

 

William Hale

A soldier in War of 1812, he was the first Mayor of Peoria. Died in 1859 - Oak Hill

 

 

 

Captain John Hall

He was the Superintendent of Springdale Cemetery 1856-1862 and 1865-1873 and was a Civil War veteran who marched with Sherman to the sea.  He organized the Fort Clark Horse Railway.  Died in1909 - The Cove

Martin Kingman

He was owner of the Kingman Plow Company, also one of the organizers of the Jenney Electric Company and Peoria Saving Loan & Trust Company. Died in 1904 - Vista Hill

 

 

 

HerveyLightner

He was a pioneer and a capitalist and is commonly referred to as the "builder of SpringdaleCemetery", one of the 4 original incorporators of the Springdale Cemetery Association.

Joseph Petarde

He is Peoria's "Forgotten Sculptor" is noted for his religious and cemetery works of art. Died in 1942 - Lawn Division

MosesPettengill

He opened first hardware business in Peoria in partnership with Jacob Gale (later Judge Gale).  Died 1883 - The Glen

 

 

 

 

Henry Means Pindell.  

He was Peoria's premier journalist and founded the Peoria Herald newspaper; later purchased the Peoria Transcript and the PeoriaJournal.  Died 1924 -  Pindell/Slane/Talbott Family Mausoleum - Norwood Division.

 

 

 

John Cleveland Proctor

He was a philanthropist who built Cottage Hospital (later renamed ProctorHospital), and Proctor Home, now St. Augustine Manor.   Died in 1907 - Vista Hill

Fred J. Soldan

He was the first Head Librarian of Peoria Public Library.  Died of pneumonia at age 39, in 1891 - Masonic Lot in Oak Ridge

 

 

 

 

Erastus Swift Willcox

He was a librarian and author of the legislation establishing public libraries in Illinois - The Free Library Law of 1872.  47 other states patterned laws after Willcox's work.  Died in 1915 - The Cove

S. Patterson Prowse

He was the third Head Librarian of Peoria Public Library and suffered a fatal heart attack at the conclusion of a Library Board meeting in 1922 - NorthCenter

 

 

 

 

Norman Purple

He was an early Peoria attorney and judge and was appointed Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court by Gov. Thomas Ford in 1846. He compiled the general statutes of the state, known as the Purple Statutes. Died in 1863 -Vista Hill (one of Springdale's most unusual burial site)  

 

 

 

General Isiah Stillman

He was a general in the Black Hawk War. Died in 1861 - Mt.Prospect

IsaacUnderhill  

He was known as the “Empire Builder” and was the first big business promoter and land developer in Peoria.  Died in 1875 - Walnut Grove

 

 

 

Hedley Waycott

He was born in England and became an internationally known artist. Died in 1938 - Oak Hill

 

 

 

 

Lemon Hill Wiley

He was a Civil War Veteran and internationally known musician; he played before Queen of England and other world leaders. Died in 1912 - Hickory Slope

AloisZotz 

A “Free Thinker”, he was the editor of the Illinois Banner , the first German language newspaper in Peoria . Died in 1893 - the Zotz Mausoleum/Middle Valley .

 

 

 

William Hale

A soldier in War of 1812, he was the first Mayor of Peoria. Died in 1859 - Oak Hill

 

 

 

John C. Flanagan

An attorney in early life, he became a land developer. His mansion at 942 NE Glen Oak built in 1840, is now headquarters for the Peoria Historical Society and Peoria Chapter D.A.R. Died in 1891 - Prospect Hill
